Can we trust the Florida Aquifer?
The Florida Aquifer has always been our most valuable natural resource. One of the aquifers most productive in the world, the Florida Aquifer produces more than 8 billion gallons of water a day's supply of drinking water, residential, industrial and agricultural. It is also one of the largest aquifers, based much of the southeastern U.S. – Approximately 100,000 square kilometers in the south-eastern Georgia, southern Alabama, South Carolina South, and the entire state of Florida.
Today, the Florida Aquifer is suffering. Pollution is making its way into our water supply. Many contaminants have been found in various locations throughout the state of Florida. Everything from agricultural chemicals, gasoline, MTBE, pesticides, herbicides and many more contaminants have been found. Leaking gas tanks, industrial waste, septic tanks, agricultural runoff and sewers Street are just a few sources of contamination.
Imagine the huge amount of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides used on golf courses, farms and gardens in Florida. Now imagine what happens when it rains.
These chemicals, and other various sources are washed into the soil by
their way into groundwater, then through the permeable rock water
aquifer itself.
Many of these chemicals are known to have adverse effects on human health. Cancer
birth defects and many other ailments have proved to be caused by contaminants found in drinking water today.
Our cities and towns here in Florida make every effort to provide tap water safe to drink.
Demand has increased dramatically in recent decades as populations growing
quickly. Many of our water plants older are unable to handle the huge demand.
filtrating point use is the only safe solution as many bottled waters are just tap water.
Public awareness is growing regarding this issue, but many Floridians still
believe that the aquifer is pure. This is an important concern because even if contamination is found to be in a low, the long-term use can be harmful to health. Babies, toddlers, seniors and persons with compromised immune systems can suffer death by the disease and possible ingestion of contaminated water.
